Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYangsan Hwajerido Island Kiln Site occupies an area with commoners' graves on a low hill behind Hwaje Elementary School, in Hwaje-ri, Wondong-myeon. Kilns and ceramic sherds producing green-glazed celadon (nokcheongja) have been identified there. The collected sherds were made from coarse clay mixed with impurities such as sand. Depending on the iron content, the glaze fired green, brown or grey, and the surface is uneven. The green-glazed celadon sherds recovered at the site share features with green-glazed celadon found at kilns in Gyeongseo-dong, Buk-gu, Incheon, and in Jinsan-ri, Sanyi-myeon, Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do. Almost all of the sherds are undecorated, and the pieces collected are mostly bowls and dishes. Green-glazed celadon is generally regarded as a type of early Goryeo celadon alongside haemuri-gup celadon (celadon with a sun-halo-shaped foot). However, some scholars hold that it was produced only in regional kilns in the late 11th century. The Yangsan Hwajerido Island Kiln Site provides valuable material for research into when green-glazed celadon was produced.
