Yangsan Gasallido Island Kiln Site
양산가산리도요지 · 梁山架山里陶窯址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGyeongsangnam-do Monument No. 196. There are two kiln sites in this area producing buncheong ware, a greyish stoneware coated with white slip: one lies in the valley behind Sangni village, and the other lies below Gasan Reservoir, behind the resettlement area of Hopo village. At the kiln site on the hill behind Hopo village, a well-preserved deposit layer and the floor of a kiln were found. The buncheong ware collected there was made from a relatively finely refined clay body, thinly glazed in pale grey, and much of it is decorated mainly with the stamped (inhwa) inlay technique. A few pieces of line-pattern (seonmun) buncheong ware without a white-slip coating were also excavated, along with a considerable number of dishes and bowls decorated with spiral lines (waseonmun). The motifs include common grass (chomun) patterns, chrysanthemum patterns, chain patterns and wave-form radial-line patterns. Bowls and dishes predominate, but ritual vessels, jars, bottles and maebyeong (plum-blossom vases) were also excavated, and firing is thought to have used saggars (gapbal) and kiln supports (dochim). The buncheong ware from this kiln site bears various inscriptions, including "梁山長興庫" (Yangsan Jangheunggo) and "長興庫" (Jangheunggo), which suggest the importance of this kiln site.
