Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSanggyo-ri Goryeo Stone Chamber Tomb is a unique structure combining an underground stone chamber tomb with a two-tiered platform built above it. The stone chamber tomb is located on a ridge extending south-west from Udusan Mountain (484.4 m above sea level). According to the excavation survey, the stone chamber was built underground by piling broken stones into a circular burial chamber, with a long rectangular passage constructed at the front leading into the chamber. The ceiling is flat, covered with two large flat stones each 1.3 m wide, so that the overall shape of the tomb resembles a keyhole. The floor of the burial chamber is about 1.63 m in diameter, with a height of 1.67–1.75 m. The passage is 2.2 m long (north–south) and about 0.9 m wide. The above-ground structure is shaped like a two-tiered staircase: the lower platform measures 4.42 m (east–west) by 4.12 m (north–south) by 0.46 m in height, a rectangle longer east–west than north–south, while the upper platform measures 3.22 m by 2.8 m by 0.5 m in height. The square platform resembles the base of a Buddhist pagoda, and given the presence of the Godalsa Temple Site nearby, the tomb's style appears to have been strongly influenced by Buddhism. Artefacts excavated from the tomb include a bronze spoon, an iron candlestick, a flat-sided ceramic bottle, iron nails, an inlaid celadon bowl (made using sanggam, an inlay technique using white and black slip), fragments of white porcelain and celadon, and human bones. A tomb combining a circular burial chamber with a separate two-tiered platform built above it has no known parallel, and is considered to be of high academic value.
