Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a settlement site containing remains from the Bronze Age and the Proto–Three Kingdoms period. It is located on the summit of Yeogisan Mountain (104 m above sea level) and on the ridge extending north-west from it; the western part of the site has been considerably damaged by granite quarrying. Three Bronze Age dwelling sites were investigated; they are presumed to have been long rectangular in plan, and the excavation of notched-rim pottery and hole-patterned pottery indicates that they date to the middle Bronze Age. Six dwelling sites from the Proto–Three Kingdoms period were investigated. They are pit-houses shaped like the character '凸' (convex), with an entrance structure projecting to the south, although the living space itself is hexagonal or pentagonal in plan. Inside Dwelling Site No. 5, a single-line flue in the shape of the character 'ㄱ' was found, built with a stone tunnel-shaped frame finished with a clay coating. The pottery excavated from the Proto–Three Kingdoms dwelling sites consists of plain hard-fired pottery and paddle-patterned pottery, in everyday forms used for cooking, storage and transport. Clay spindle whorls and bellows nozzles, along with large quantities of slag, were also excavated, suggesting that textile production and ironworking took place here. Judging from the floor plans of the dwellings and the excavated artefacts, the Proto–Three Kingdoms village is presumed to date from around the early third century. This site is significant not only as the first Proto–Three Kingdoms village site investigated in the area south of the Han River, but also because the single-line flue and the hexagonal dwelling with a projecting entrance structure found here are both unprecedented discoveries.
