Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krPyeongtaek Museongsan Mountain Fortress Site is located on Museongsan Mountain, 104.7m above sea level, in Okgil-ri, Cheongbuk-myeon, Pyeongtaek. The Balan Stream flows to the north, and to the south a ridge running toward Jamisan and Bipasan mountains extends in the direction of Asan Bay, making the site a strategic point blocking the east-west transport route. Museongsan Mountain Fortress was built along the ridge near the summit of the mountain. In plan it is an elongated oval, a polygon with parts protruding. The rampart is earthen, with a total circumference of 547m. It was built by levelling the foundation, compacting clay on top to bring it to a level, and then piling up clay and sand in alternating layers. Around the northern bastion, a layer of stacked roof tiles was found at the base. All fortress walls were built using the earthworks techniques of their time, so shared characteristics can be identified according to who built them and when. The roof tiles found at the base of the wall indicate that Museongsan Mountain Fortress was built in the early Goryeo period. Earthen fortresses of this period commonly share a construction method in which a row of foundation stones is laid, the core rampart is built up by the rammed-earth (pan-chuk) method, a layer of roof tiles is spread over it, and inner and outer rampart layers are then added. At the wall, the remains of gates, bastions, a command-post site, a drainage outlet and buildings have been identified. Museongsan Mountain Fortress appears to be connected with the changing location of the local administrative seat in the Pyeongtaek region from the end of Unified Silla into the early Goryeo period, and its scale corresponds to that of a county-level administrative fortress. It is an important site illustrating the historical transition of administrative fortresses from stone to earthen construction, and from mountain fortresses to hilltop-plain fortresses.
