A beacon station (bongsudae) was a means of communication in the past, used to send urgent news by fire and smoke. Signallers climbed high mountains and lit fires, sending signals by smoke during the day and by firelight at night. The Gangmangsan Beacon Station in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, stands at the summit of Gangmangsan Mountain, 370 m above sea level, where the peak forms the boundary between Deokpo-dong and Jangmok-myeon. The yeondae, the platform built for lighting the beacon fires, was constructed by stacking natural stones and packing the gaps with small stones. Today, traces remain only of the outer two tiers; above this the slope becomes too steep to examine, though it is thought that the structure may originally have risen to three tiers. The exact date of construction is unknown, but its structure resembles that of the Ongnyeobong Beacon Station on Geojedo Island, built in the early Joseon period, suggesting the two were built around the same time. The 'Gaeulgot Beacon Station' at Yulpo, recorded in the Daedong yeojido (Map of Korea), is thought to be this Gangmangsan Beacon Station, believed to have formed part of the beacon-signal route linking the northern part of Geoje to the central beacon station on Mongmyeoksan, present-day Namsan Mountain, in Seoul.
