Jamisan Mountain Fortress Site stands on Jamisan, a 110.8 m peak in Yongseong-ri, Anjung-eup, Pyeongtaek. Although Jamisan is not particularly high, there are no higher mountains nearby, so a wide area can be seen from it. This was a strategic point on the route running from Gyeongju through Sangju to Namyangman Bay. The fortress was built along the ridgeline of Jamisan. Its plan is a rectangle slightly elongated in the east–west direction. It was built as a stone fortress with a total circumference of 582 m. The wall's foundation was cut in steps, and schist stone was dressed into rectangular blocks and laid precisely in even courses. Both the inner face of the wall and its core were also built of stone, and at the base of the outer face a supplementary retaining wall was built up to a certain height. The north gate site was found to be a hyeonmun-style gate, which had to be entered by ladder, and an inner barbican was built just inside the gate to strengthen its defence. Inside the fortress, a storage facility with a floor of flat stone slabs and a circular water-collection facility have been identified. Although the artefacts excavated include Baekje pottery, Silla pottery and roof-tile fragments from the Unified Silla period, the construction method indicates that Jamisan Mountain Fortress was built by Silla in the latter half of the sixth century. It appears to have served as the administrative seat of Sanghol-hyeon county under Silla and to have continued in operation until the end of the Unified Silla period. Jamisan Mountain Fortress is an important site for understanding the changes in county administrative seats and the differences in construction methods according to the ruling power responsible for building them.
