Located behind Seonchang village in Jisepo-ri, Illun-myeon, Geoje-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, this is a mountain fortress with walls built of stacked stone. The eastern section of the fortress is largely well preserved, but the rest has been repurposed as retaining walls for paddies and fields, or as house walls. It is presumed that gates were placed on all four sides, east, west, south and north, with gate towers (seongnu, tall structures built above a gate or wall for observation) positioned between them. Today a village occupies the seaside area within the fortress, with paddies and fields elsewhere, while the area outside the fortress likewise consists of farmland and woodland. The fortress was built during the reign of King Injong of Joseon out of concern over invasions by Japanese pirates, mobilising 25,000 labourers from the six districts of the Yeongnam region; a garrison was stationed below the fortress, with naval forces deployed for its defence. When the Imjin War broke out the fortress fell, and the manho (garrison commander) of the time, General Gang Ji-uk, was driven back beyond Okpo Fortress, returning to this site in the second year of King Hyojong's reign (1651). A stele for a naval manho still stands at the fortress entrance today.
