Guyeongdeungseong Fortress, Geoje
거제 구영등성 · 巨濟 舊永登城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis fortress stands on the foot of a hill south of Guyeong village, on the coast of Jangmok-myeon, Geoje-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, built to a roughly conical plan; farmland and houses now occupy the ground both inside and outside its walls. It lies at the northernmost point of Geojedo Island, closest to the mainland areas of Jinhae and Ungcheon, and many fortress remains, including Yeongdeung Waeseong (a Japanese-style fort) and Guyulpo-seong, are found in the surrounding area. Most of the wall today has been destroyed, leaving only the foundation course, but its structure and construction technique can still be identified to some extent. Semicircular ongseong (small auxiliary walls built outside a gate to protect it) were built at both the north and south, each with its entrance set to one side. The outer face of the wall was built of large stones, while the inner face was built by laying stones flat against the ground and then packing in stones of various sizes in orderly courses. The fortress was built in 1490, the 21st year of King Seongjong, and suffered heavy damage from repeated Japanese raids during the reigns of King Jungjong and King Seonjo. Afterwards, in 1623, the first year of King Injo, the garrison was moved to present-day Yeongdeung, and this site remained known as Guyeongdeung (Old Yeongdeung). Records state that the fortress had a circumference of 1,068 cheok.
