Pyeongtaek Deongmok-ri Fortress Site
평택덕목리성지 · 平澤德睦里城地

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe site lies on a gently sloping hillside at about 20m above sea level, descending from Godeungsan Mountain in Deongmok-ri, Hyeondeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek-si. It is divided into an east fortress and a west fortress that face each other across the access road into Wondeongmok village. The east fortress has been completely destroyed as the village grew, and the west fortress has been damaged by land readjustment, leaving only part of its wall and interior. Taking into account the extent of damage to both fortresses, the original total scale of the fortress is estimated at about 520m. Wall facilities identified include two gate sites, a projecting bastion and building sites. The wall was built as an earthen rampart. A foundation stone course was laid on both sides of the base, corner posts were erected, the core earth was formed by a rammed-earth technique, and inner and outer earthen embankments were then added. The core rampart was built by alternating layers of clayey and sandy soil, compacted with a rammer, each layer finished with precision to a thickness of about 5 to 10cm. There was a moat outside the wall. Roof tiles, earthenware and porcelain dating from the Unified Silla period to the Goryeo period have been excavated within the fortress. Judging from the construction technique and the artefacts recovered, Deongmok-ri Fortress is presumed to have been built in the late Unified Silla to early Goryeo period. Given its scale, it is thought to have been the seat of a hyeon (county)-level administrative fortress. Although now considerably damaged, Deongmok-ri Fortress is an important site, both for the early date of its construction and for what it suggests about the possible relocation of the seat of county government in the Pyeongtaek region.
