The Goheung Jeori-do stock-farm wall is located around Eojeon-ri and Seokjeong-ri on Geogeum-do Island, Geumsan-myeon; Jeori-do was the Joseon-period name for Geogeum-do. The wall runs through the valley formed between Jeokdaebong Peak (592.2 m) and Yongdubong Peak (418.6 m), and through the saddle of the ridge connecting the two peaks, running north to south and dividing the area roughly in half. It lies at the western foot of a gently rolling hill and continues south as far as the coastline. According to the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the Jeori-do stock-farm wall was built in 1466, the 12th year of King Sejo, at the request of Park Sik, the Jeolla-do inspector of horse pastures (jeomma byeolgam), who mobilised naval troops stationed near Jeori-do to raise horses. At the time of construction, it was judged that the pasture, with its abundant water and grass, could support around 800 horses; indeed, by 1470, the first year of King Seongjong, records show 364 horses at pasture (bangmok) there, confirming that the Jeori-do pasture was one of the important stock farms of the early Joseon period. The wall is a cross-wall, or jangseong (long wall), built of stone to cut across the island from north to south. Excluding the section in the north of the island where no remains survive, it extends for 4,652 m, measuring 3.2 m wide at the base and 1.4 m at the top. The Jeori-do stock-farm wall is an unusual surviving example of an early Joseon stock-farm wall, and because its date of construction can be established with some precision, it carries considerable historical and academic value.
