Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis fortress, in Jangmok-myeon, Geoje-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, is a stone-built fortress in a valley surrounded by mountains on three sides, all but the east. Outside the fortress are private houses, and the interior is used as farmland, so that the surrounding layout can easily be made out. At the gate sites, small subsidiary walls built to protect the gates stand to the north and south; the southern one survives reasonably well, but only traces remain of the northern one. It is said that the fortress was originally built on the seashore at Oepo and later moved to this location; the Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam, in its entry for Geoje, records it as having been called Yulpobu. According to the Geoje-gunji (Gazetteer of Geoje County), in the fourteenth year of King Sukjong's reign (1688) the naval commander Yi Se-hyeon submitted a report and had a fortress built here, stationing a gwon'gwan of the ninth military rank to defend it. During the Imjin War it was used as a defence post under the Right Naval Command, and it also came under attack by Japanese forces during the Battle of Chilcheollyang.
