Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGoheung Namyangnisanseong Fortress encircles the summit of a 162m-high mountain in the Namyang-ri and Jungsan-ri area of Goheung-gun, a position that commands views of the sea on both the east and west sides. This area was the seat of Jojoryehyeon County in the Baekje period. Jojoryehyeon was renamed Chungnyeolhyeon County under King Gyeongdeok of Unified Silla, and its name changed again to Namyanghyeon County in the Goryeo period. Namyangnisanseong is a stone-built mountain fortress with a total circumference of 534m and a wall roughly 4m wide. In plan it is irregular, longer north-south than east-west, and sections of the east wall and part of the north wall survive well. The interior slopes gently down from the north-west to the south-east, and twelve flat, terraced areas have been identified inside, most of which were formerly cultivated as paddies or dry fields and are now abandoned farmland. At the centre of the fortress are two round, stone-lined wells set side by side, now sealed and dry. The gate site lies about 40m west of a turning point on the south-eastern side of the wall that is used as the present access route; today almost no trace of it remains, buried under earth and sand, though the outer corner on the east side still stands to a height of about 90cm. Pottery, porcelain, roof tiles, spindle whorls, whetstones and stone balls have been excavated within the fortress, and the character of these finds suggests that it was first built in the Baekje period and continued in use through to the Joseon period. Judging from the fortress's location, its construction method and the excavated relics, Namyangnisanseong was first built in the Baekje period, and it holds great historical and academic value as important material for understanding Baekje mountain fortresses in the eastern part of South Jeolla Province.
