Goheung Dokchiseong Fortress encloses the peak of Seongmoesan Mountain (175-212m above sea level), at the end of the eastern ridge of Jogyesan Mountain (463.1m) to the northwest. The plain to the south lies in full view, and the sea to the east can also be seen. Dokchiseong Fortress has a total length of 508m, making it the third largest of the Baekje stone fortresses in eastern Jeollanam-do, after Gwangyang Marosanseong Fortress (550m, Jeonnam Monument) and Goheung Namyang-ri Sanseong Fortress (534m, Jeonnam Monument). The wall survives clearly except for one section in the south that has been lost. Its sloping stretches were built by horizontal coursing, a method intended to distribute the wall's load evenly and prevent collapse. Gate sites remain in two places, to the east and north; as at Suncheon Geomdansanseong Fortress (a historic site) and Yeosu Goraksanseong Fortress (cultural heritage material), both identified as Baekje-period fortresses, the outer face of each gate curves while the inner face is nearly right-angled. At the northwest and northeast corners of the wall, rectangular projecting bastions (chi) were built out from the wall to help defend it; they measure about 4.5m by 6.4m, and are the first such bastions confirmed among the Baekje fortresses of this region, making them valuable evidence. Artefacts recovered inside the fortress include Three Kingdoms-period pottery fragments, buncheong ware fragments, and plain roof-tile fragments, some of the tiles bearing a brushwood pattern on their inner face, a distinctive find that appears without exception at Baekje fortresses across eastern Jeollanam-do. Dokchiseong Fortress was first built in the late Baekje period, and is of great historical and academic value for understanding the Baekje fortresses of the region.
