Yeoncheon Yangwon-ri Dolmen
연천양원리고인돌 · 漣川兩遠里고인돌

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDolmens are representative tombs of the Bronze Age, known mainly as the tombs of a ruling class with economic wealth or political power. They typically have a huge capstone exposed above ground, beneath which lie support stones, a burial precinct, and a burial chamber, though the form varies greatly by region and period. They are generally classified as table-style, with the burial chamber above ground, or as base-style (also called go-board-style), with the chamber underground. The Yangwon-ri Dolmen stands on a flat terrace above a tributary of the Yangwoncheon Stream, itself a tributary of the Hantangang River. It is a table-style dolmen, with a large capstone resting on two support stones. The capstone is made of gneiss and has been extensively worked along its edges so that its shape resembles a turtle's shell; it measures 3.8 m long and 3.4 m wide, and its upper surface bears a cupmark 10 cm in diameter. The support stones stand on the east and west sides, but the western one has tilted, leaving the capstone sloping toward the northwest. Made of granite, the support stones are 2.65-2.75 m long, and the burial chamber is estimated to measure about 2.5 m long and 0.6 m wide. The blocking stone on the north side survives but has fallen into the burial chamber.
