Goheung Baekchiseong Fortress
고흥백치성 · 高興栢峙城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBaekchiseong Fortress encircles the summit of Dangchi (207.6m above sea level), the midpoint of the ridge that connects Cheondeungsan Mountain (550m above sea level) to Bibongsan Mountain (447.6m above sea level). It stands close enough to Goheung Dokchiseong Fortress (Jeollanam-do Monument No. 208) to the north and Goheung Ochieumseong Fortress (Jeollanam-do Monument No. 210) to the south-west that both can be seen with the naked eye. It is a stone-built mountain fortress with a total circumference of 444m, rectangular in plan along a north–south axis. Four sites presumed to be the remains of buildings survive within the fortress. Most of the artefacts excavated here are roof tiles — flat tile fragments bearing lattice, line, plain and combined patterns. Based on its location, construction method and excavated artefacts, Baekchiseong is thought to have first been built as a mountain fortress during the Baekje period. Together with Goheung Dokchiseong Fortress and Goheung Namyang-ri Mountain Fortress (Jeollanam-do Monument No. 207), it is highly valuable historically and academically as important material for understanding the Baekje-period mountain fortresses of eastern Jeollanam-do.
