The Sindap-ri Ancient Tomb, together with the Gangnae-ri Ancient Tomb in Yeoncheon, is one of the representative Goguryeo tombs found in northern Gyeonggi Province. The mound is reported to be round, though it may in fact be square-topped. Both tombs were looted long ago, leaving vertical holes large enough for a person to pass through, and it is said that further tombs once stood nearby, but these have already been destroyed by road construction and land readjustment. The tombs are stone-chamber tombs built above ground beneath earthen mounds, with an entrance passage leading into the square burial chamber set on the right side in Tomb No. 1 and in the centre in Tomb No. 2. The chamber walls and floor are made mainly of flat stone slabs, with gaps packed with gravel and small stones; Tomb No. 1 in particular has its entire surface finished with plaster. The ceiling of the burial chamber in Tomb No. 1 was closed using a triangular corbelled technique with chamfered corners. Fragments of pottery and human bone from two individuals were found scattered in the burial chamber and the earthen mound, including a bottle-shaped vessel of Goguryeo type. The tombs are thought to date from the fifth to sixth centuries, when Goguryeo controlled the area south of the Hangang River. Along the Hantangang River, where the tombs stand, Goguryeo fortresses such as Jeongok-ri Toseong Fortress and Eundaeriseong Fortress are also found, making this an important source of evidence for Goguryeo's southward expansion.
