Uiwang Moraksanseong Fortress stands on Moraksan Mountain (385m above sea level), on the boundary between Ojeon-dong and Naeson-dong in Uiwang. The area was a strategic point on the route from Hanseong to Suwon and Hwaseong. From the summit of Moraksan Mountain the area of Gunpo, Anyang and Gwacheon can be seen spread out below, and with broad plains around it the site was well suited to serve as an administrative centre. The wall was built to enclose several peaks and its plan is an irregular polygon. It is an earthen fortress with a total circumference of 878m, relatively large in scale. Most sections are built of earth, but stretches using stone, and stretches with no wall at all, are also found. The earthen sections appear to have been built by heaping up soil rather than by the rammed-earth technique. Where earth alone would not hold, stone was used for reinforcement, but since roughly worked fieldstones were generally used, the wall is not neatly finished. Two gate sites, bastions, and building sites have been identified along the wall, and most of the artefacts recovered within the fortress are Baekje pottery fragments. The method of heaping and compacting earth for the wall, with unworked stone used in places, resembles that of Pocheon Gomo-risanseong Fortress and Paju Wollongsanseong Fortress. Given this construction method and the excavated artefacts, Moraksanseong Fortress is a Baekje fortress, presumed to have been built and used from the late fourth century to the mid-to-late fifth century. Moraksanseong Fortress is an important site for understanding the defence system of Baekje and the fortress-building methods of the Baekje Hanseong period (18 BC-AD 475).
