This is a hilltop-encircling mountain fortress (tereseong), built by walling round the summit of the mountain using natural rock cliffs. According to the Gyeongsang-do sokchan jiriji (Supplementary Geography of Gyeongsang Province), compiled in 1469 (the first year of King Yejong), the fortress was built in 1439 (the 21st year of King Sejong). The Dongguk yeoji seungnam, compiled in 1481 (the 12th year of King Seongjong), records that "Akgyeonsanseong is built of stone, and its circumference is 2,008 cheok (about 660 m)." Later, during the Japanese invasions of Korea, in 1594 (the 27th year of King Seonjo), General Gwak Jae-u (1552-1617), then magistrate of Seongju, is said to have repaired the fortress again on the instructions of Yu Seong-ryong (1542-1607), the do-chechalsa, a senior wartime commissioner overseeing military affairs across several provinces. The fortress wall has collapsed in places but survives in relatively good condition overall. The wall stands about 2.7 m high, and on the flat ground at the mountain's summit the sites of former buildings remain. Built using the fortress-construction methods of the Joseon dynasty, this mountain fortress is a valuable source of information for research in this field.
