The Hwawon-myeon celadon kiln site in Haenam is the only place in Korea where early celadon kilns are found gathered together as a group, and it offers a view onto the very beginnings of Korean celadon. It is therefore regarded as an extremely important kiln site for understanding the origins of Korean ceramics and the changing shapes of early celadon vessels. Artefacts excavated here include celadon, black-glazed ware, earthenware and kiln tools; the celadon vessel types include bowls (daejeop and wan), dishes, flower-shaped dishes, bottles, oil bottles, flattened bottles (pyeonbyeong) and jars. The Hwawon-myeon celadon kiln site is estimated to comprise some 80-90 individual kilns in all, 54 of them concentrated around Sindeok-ri and 2 around Geumpyeong-ri. Thought to date from the end of Silla or the beginning of Goryeo, the Hwawon-myeon celadon is typical "early celadon," characterised by haemuri (halo-shaped) foot rims and plain, undecorated surfaces. Various views exist as to exactly when this type first emerged, but the theory that it appeared in the first half of the ninth century is the one most widely put forward. The lineage of Hwawon-myeon celadon is considered to rest fundamentally on Chinese celadon manufacturing techniques, into which the techniques of traditional earthenware-making were also incorporated.
