Jangheung Punggil-ri Celadon Kiln Site
장흥풍길리청자요지 · 長興豊吉里靑瓷窯址
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Punggil-ri celadon kiln site was excavated in 2014 and 2016. The investigation confirmed one celadon kiln, an associated ditch-shaped feature, and a refuse deposit layer. Kiln No. 1 at the Punggil-ri site is a semi-subterranean climbing kiln of the earthen-built type, its floor shallowly cut into the ground and its walls built up using clay and stone. The artefacts recovered in the investigation fall into porcelain, earthenware, and kiln-tool categories. The porcelain finds include a wide range of forms: bowls with the line-type halo-shaped foot-ring and the transitional, Chinese-style halo-shaped foot-ring — both markers of the earliest phase of celadon production — as well as bowls, dishes, bottles, jars, ewers, lids, and cup stands. The kiln tools recovered include saggars and kiln supports, used to stack porcelain pieces inside the kiln during firing. The saggars occur in cylindrical, bowl-shaped, and inverted-bowl-shaped forms, a combination also seen at a comparatively early stage among other early celadon kiln sites. While the Punggil-ri kiln resembles the earthen-built kilns of the Gangjin region in its geographic location, structure, building materials and scale, and is a typical earthen-built kiln of the southern region, the artefacts excavated from it show the same brick-built-kiln style of wares found at Bangsan-dong in Siheung and at Seo-ri in Yongin. This matches the pattern seen at Kiln No. 63 in Yongun-ri, Gangjin, and suggests that a shared system of celadon production may have operated across the south-western coastal region. The Punggil-ri kiln site carries great significance as one of the places that first produced celadon in the southern Korean peninsula, and it holds important value for research into early Korean celadon production using earthen-built kilns across the southern coastal region from the late tenth to the early eleventh century.
