The choryeongmok habitat lies on a hillside about 50m from the Sinan Migratory Bird Exhibition Hall, at the entrance to Jilli village. Choryeongmok (Michelia compressa) is a tree of the genus Michelia in the magnolia family. A specimen here over 300 years old was designated a natural monument in 1992, but when that tree died in 2001 the designation was lifted; in its place, 43 young choryeongmok trees growing wild nearby were designated a local monument. Choryeongmok grows only on Jeju Island and Heuksando Island and is a protected species at risk of extinction. The trees are found in the shrub and herb layers of the Jillidang sacred grove, a village grove traditionally used for communal rites, standing 100 to 250cm tall. A recent survey confirmed a total of 66 choryeongmok trees now growing wild there. Visitors can explore the grove via a walking trail built by the national park, and Sinan County has named it the "Garden of the Gods." At the foot of the grove stand the Sinan Migratory Bird Exhibition Hall and the National Park Migratory Bird Research Centre.
