Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Bukhansan Mountain Sanyeongnuji Site, Goyang, is the site of Sanyeongnu, a pavilion (a building built so that one could look out in every direction) within Bukhansanseong Fortress. It is not known exactly when Sanyeongnu was built, but since the earliest record of the 'old site of Sanyeongnu' appears in Yi Jeong-gu's Record of an Excursion to Samgaksan Mountain, written in 1603, it can be presumed that the pavilion was built before that date. Sanyeongnu subsequently burned down and was repaired on several occasions. It was destroyed in the great flood of 1925, leaving only its foundation stones, and was restored in 2014 when Goyang City carried out the '600 Years of Goyang History Restoration Project'. The foundation stones of Sanyeongnu are considered the oldest surviving remains among its building materials. Ten long foundation stones were set on top of a rock, each shaped into a roughly rectangular form. The pavilion measured three bays across the front, with one additional bay attached at the centre, giving it a plan resembling the character '凸'. Its roof was a hip-and-gable roof that, seen from the side, took a form resembling the character '八' (meaning 'eight').
