Sangnam Dolmen, Changwon
창원 상남지석묘 · 昌原 上南支石墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krLocated near the Sangnam commercial district, this is a prehistoric Bronze Age tomb, known as a dolmen or goindol. Sangnam Dolmen, Changwon was excavated in December 1997 by the National Changwon Research Institute of Cultural Heritage. It has a distinctive structure in which a stone coffin was built to hold the body, covered with numerous quarried stones and a large capstone, above which supporting stones and a covering stone were placed again. Together with the nearby Deokcheon-ri Dolmen, Changwon, this dolmen is known as one of Korea's representative southern-style dolmens. The stone coffin forming the burial chamber was built deep and sturdy, and the large capstone lends the tomb an imposing presence; it is presumed to have been the tomb of the region's supreme chieftain at the time, and the capstone measures approximately 270 x 185 x 190cm. Due to the Sangnam commercial district housing development project, the city of Changwon relocated one dolmen and one stone-cist tomb to their present location in April 2001 and restored them to their original condition.
