Mitasanseong Fortress, Uiryeong
의령 미타산성 · 宜寧 彌陀山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMitasanseong is a temoe-sik stone fortress, a mountaintop type whose wall encircles the summit, with its interior formed by the top of Mitasan Mountain (662 m above sea level) and its wall running along the ridge about nine-tenths of the way up the surrounding slopes. From inside the fortress the Chogye Basin can be seen to the north, Sinban lies to the south-east, Changnyeong is visible far to the east, Cheonhwangsan Mountain (656 m) and Guksabong Peak (688 m) stand to the west, and Bongsan Mountain (563 m) lies to the south. The fortress was built to follow the lie of the land, so its plan is curved. Inside, the north and west are steep while the east and south are relatively flat; outside, likewise, the south and east are flat while the north and west are steep. Inside the fortress are a beacon-fire site (bongsudae) and a temple site, the latter now with no building, only foundation stones and the remains of a spring; there are also private houses in front of the hidden gate (amun) to the south-east and within the fortress. Roof-tile fragments, pottery and porcelain sherds collected from various spots inside the fortress suggest it was in use for a considerable period. Roof-tile fragments continue to be found across the wide, flat summit area, and a building site confirmed by the present survey lies due north. It is a valuable site for the study of Joseon-period frontier defence.
