Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJeongchungsa Temple, Suncheon is a shrine dedicated to Jang Yun (張潤, 1552–1593), who raised the Left Jeolla Righteous Army during the Japanese invasions of Korea (the Imjin War) of the Joseon period, won great merit, and died a martyr's death at the Battle of Jinjuseong Fortress, one of the great victories that marked a turning point in that war; the shrine received a royal charter bestowing its name in 1686, the 12th year of King Sukjong. It was demolished in 1868, the 5th year of Emperor Gojong, under the order abolishing seowon academies, and was rebuilt in 1907, relatively early among such restorations. Records relating to Jeongchungsa from before its demolition, from the late Joseon period, such as the Bobu-rok and the Jipgang-an, also survive, giving it value as a historical source as well. The overall layout of the shrine follows the jeonhak-humyo ("lecture hall in front, shrine behind") arrangement, the shrine building set about 3.8 m higher than the outer three-bay gate and the lecture-hall area in front of it. The spirit hall is a gable-roofed (matbae) building three bays wide and one and a half bays deep, while the jaesil, the hall for ritual preparation, is a hip-and-gable-roofed (paljak) building four and a half bays wide and one and a half bays deep. Jeongchungsa retains old-style structural joinery, and although built as a shrine on sloping ground, it is equipped with a spirit hall, an inner gate, a jaesil and an outer gate, embodying the norms of vertical spatial arrangement, and it remains in good condition.
