The site of Gangjin Walled Town, which survives at the foot of present-day Boeunsan Mountain, retains its various facilities — not only the walls themselves but gate sites, ongseong (barbican enclosures at the gates), chi (projecting bastions), a moat, an outer moat path, building sites, wells and a pond — in generally well-preserved original condition, and the artefacts recovered are evenly distributed in date from the Three Kingdoms period (Baekje) through to the Joseon period. The site of Gangjin Walled Town can be seen as evidence that a fortress first built in the Three Kingdoms period was repeatedly rebuilt and reinforced down to the Joseon period, maintaining its function as a seat of local administration; as a site with more than a thousand years of history and tradition, it is judged to be an important resource for the study of Korea's fortress history.
