Presumed Songdaesanseong Fortress, Jinju
진주 전 송대산성 · 晋州 傳 松臺山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a fortress enclosing two peaks at the summit of Jukbangsan Mountain (also known as Songdaesan, 312m above sea level), located in Daegok-ri, Daegok-myeon, Jinju. The mountain fortress rises beside the middle reaches of the Namgang River, commanding a clear view of the riverside below, which shows that it was built for observation, related to securing or blocking passage along the river. The fortress appears to have been built with stone walls or a mixture of earth and stone; most of the walls have collapsed, but traces of the stonework at the base or foundation remain in places. Facilities associated with the fortress that survive include two gate sites, numerous building sites and a well. Numerous roof-tile fragments have been found around a large building site inside the fortress, suggesting that this building had a tiled roof. It is not clear when the fortress was first built, but judging from artefacts such as roof tiles excavated inside it, it appears to have been mainly used during the Joseon period, and it is important academic material for the study of Joseon-period frontier defence history (gwanbangsa).
