Seonggusa is an ancestral shrine (sau) of the Chogye Byeon clan, housing the spirit tablets of three men: Byeon Bin, who held the office of Munhapyeongni and was one of the seventy-two scholars of Dumundong at the fall of Goryeo; Byeon Yeonsu, Minister of War, who distinguished himself during the Imjin War and died in service during the Jeongyu War; and his son Byeon Rip. According to the ridge-beam inscription and the name board, Seonggusa was built in 1895. In front of the shrine housing the tablets of the three loyal subjects stands Dosan Seodang, a single-row timber hall, with Ilsinjae, the east study hall, and Jonyangjae, the west study hall, arranged to its front left and right. A raised central gate, an inner three-bay gate and an outer three-bay gate are also arranged on the site. Dosan Seodang, which served as the lecture hall of Seonggusa, was built in 1914, and Ilsinjae and Jonyangjae, which served as the east and west study halls, were completed in 1915. Dosan Seodang and Ilsinjae-Jonyangjae are said to have functioned as an educational institution in this region until modern schools were established here. In particular, it is said that when the anti-Japanese movement broke out across the Jindong and Jinjeon area on 3 April 1919 (the Samjin Uprising), the Seonggusa precinct was where the Taegeukgi national flag and the Declaration of Independence were made and the uprising was plotted. Seonggusa is a timber building in the architectural style of the Joseon dynasty, built in 1895, and is highly valued for its preservation. The Seonggusa precinct is also of great historical significance, both as the place that provided Confucian scholars' education before modern schools were founded, and as the birthplace of the Samjin Uprising of 3 April, which arose across the Jindong and Jinjeon area.
