The legend of the origin of the Changnyeong Jo clan's surname (deukseong seolhwa) is recorded in the Changnyeong section of the Yeojidoseo, compiled in the 1760s during the reign of King Yeongjo; in the Changnyeong section of the Gyeongsang-do eupji, written in 1832; and in the Changnyeong section of the Yeongnam eupji, written in 1895. It is also recorded in the Sillaseonbo (Silla Royal Genealogy), believed to have been compiled in the 1820s and published in 1912: in its section on the daughters of King Jinpyeong, the youngest of three sisters - after the eldest, Queen Seondeok, and the second, Lady Cheonmyeong, wife of Yongchun and mother of King Taejong Muyeol - is recorded as having married Taesa (Grand Tutor) Jo Gye-ryong. The legend of the surname's origin is further recorded in the Changnyeong Jo-ssi daedongbo (Comprehensive Genealogy of the Changnyeong Jo Clan), the Changnyeong Jo-ssi Cheonseonggongpa-bo (Genealogy of the Cheonseonggong Branch of the Changnyeong Jo Clan), and the Changnyeong Jo-ssi yeongjeok bimyeong (Inscription on the Spiritual Trace of the Changnyeong Jo Clan), included in the Myeongmidang munjip (Collected Works of Myeongmidang) by Yi Geon-chang.
