Beacon Station on Daebang Mountain, Namhae

The site stands at the summit of Daebang Mountain in Changseon-myeon. Three routes lead up to the beacon station — a signal-fire station used to relay military and administrative alerts from hilltop to hilltop — an eastern route from Okcheon, a western route from Sapo, and a northern route from Sangsin-ri. It served as a relay point, receiving signals from the Geumsan Mountain beacon station and passing them on to the Gaksan Mountain beacon station in Sacheon. A map of the Jinju Mokjang, a government horse pasture on Changseondo Island, shows this beacon's line of communication running between Namhae's Geumsan beacon and Jinju's Gaksan beacon. The Daebang Mountain beacon station is 8.6 m high and 13.6 m in circumference. Documentary records indicate it was built sometime between 1455 and 1468. According to the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, on 9 May 1895 the Ministry of Military Affairs petitioned for the beacon stations and their garrisons at every location to be abolished, and it is certain that the Daebang Mountain beacon station was discontinued at this time as well.
