Namhae Geumosan Mountain Fortress
남해금오산성 · 南海金鰲山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis mountain fortress is a teme-sik fortress, a type built by encircling a hilltop with a single stone wall, constructed around the summit of Geumosan Mountain (261 m above sea level) in Danghang-ri, Changseon-myeon, Namhae-gun. The slope leading up to it is very steep, making access difficult, and from the fortress the eastern coast of Changseon and the Samcheonpo area are clearly visible below. The main wall was built by piling up relatively thin broken stones with no fixed order, and parapets survive in places. Bastions (chi), projecting sections of wall used to cover blind spots, can be identified at some points, and the fortress is judged to have had two gate sites. Of these, the west gate site, about 4 m wide, is relatively clear, while the south gate site is less distinct. Inside the south gate site, which lies in a valley, there is a facility presumed to be a well or a pond, with water draining out of the fortress along a channel. Elsewhere inside the fortress, building sites are difficult to identify. One notable feature, however, is a structure resembling a sentry post — of a kind also found at Jeonsongdae Mountain Fortress in Jinju — built against the inner face of the wall. The construction technique closely resembles that of Gaksan Mountain Fortress in Samcheonpo, suggesting that this fortress may date back as far as the late Goryeo period.
