Jeong Seol Bu Bu Tomb, Jinju
진주 정설 부부 묘 · 晋州新安洞鄭舌夫婦墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a square mound tomb containing the joint burial of Seol, father of Jeong Cheok, founding ancestor of the Gongdaegong branch of the Jinju Jeong clan, and his wife, Lady Gang. In plan the tomb measures 6.8 by 4.8 m, and it is unusual in being laid out as a horizontally elongated rectangle. The mound was likely enlarged in a later period, and its present form is a squared, truncated shape. Several tiers of stone revetment stand in front of the tomb, surmounted by an offering table, a pair of stone pillars (mangjuseok) and a stele, though the offering table and stele are later additions. A wall encloses the area around the tomb, and the space between the wall and the tomb is paved with flat stones (bakseok). The retaining stones (myeonseok) around the mound are made to project, in the manner of the corner and intermediate pillars of a pagoda base; the capstones are neatly arranged, five to front and back and three to each side. Numerous inscriptions are carved into the retaining stones at the front, and from their content it can be seen that Seol is buried on the left and Lady Gang on the right. Seol's burial is dated to the year gyemyo of the Yongle era (1423, the sixth year of King Sejong), and Lady Gang's to the year eulhae of the Hongwu era (1395, the fourth year of King Taejo). An amusing touch is the squirrel carved climbing a tree on top of one of the mangjuseok pillars. This tomb of the Jeong Seol couple in Sinan-dong, Jinju, bears numerous inscriptions beyond the burial dates of each occupant on its front retaining stones, and is valued as good material for studying the family history of the period.
