Ubulsanseong Fortress is thought to have been first built during the Three Kingdoms period, and its history and cultural setting place it within the Ulsan region. Standing on an important route linking Ulsan and Gyeongju, the fortress would have served a clear military purpose. Much of its wall has collapsed, but sections remain standing in places, and on its three high points the remains of jangdae (command posts), amun (concealed gates) and passageways can still be traced, along with the locations of a storehouse and a pond. The site is also significant for its connection with one of the sosa, the twenty-four minor state sacrificial rites of Silla.
