This is the tomb of Heo Won-pil (pen name Songwagong, 1492–1529), a military official of the early Joseon period who held various posts including magistrate of Yongseong, and who died in 1529, the 24th year of King Jungjong. In front of the burial ground stands a high retaining terrace, and behind it a wall, so that the burial ground is enclosed on both sides. Both the terrace and the wall are notable for being built of thin, plank-like stones with a bluish tinge. The whole burial ground, including the wall, measures about 30 by 30 metres, with the terrace reaching a maximum height of 2 metres and the wall standing around 1 metre high. Inside are two burial mounds standing side by side, with a myopyo (a stone marker recording the identity of the deceased) and a hyangnoseok (a stone platform for an incense burner) set in a line between them, and thin, flat paving stones (bakseok) laid in front. Sangseok — stone objects carved in the shape of people or animals and erected at the tomb — stand before the mounds, and a pair of mangjuseok (stone pillars erected in front of a tomb) flank them on either side. Taken together, these features show that, although this tomb does not have the square form of a banghyeongbun, it provides good material for understanding the structural characteristics of early Joseon tombs and the carving techniques used on their stone furnishings.
