Gimjuyeol Yeolsa Sisin Inyangji Site, Changwon
창원 김주열 열사 시신 인양지 · 昌原 金朱烈 烈士 屍身 引揚地

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMartyr Kim Ju-yeol went missing on 15 March 1960 during the Masan March 15 Uprising, a protest against the rigged elections perpetrated by the Liberal Party dictatorship of Rhee Syng-man. Twenty-seven days later, on 11 April, the martyr's body surfaced in the sea off Masan in a horrifying state, with a tear-gas canister lodged in his right eye. Police, acting as agents of the dictator, had tied a stone to the body of the martyr, who had fallen at the scene of the March 15 Uprising, and thrown it into the sea. Outraged by this atrocity, the citizens of Masan rose up in a popular uprising. That same day, the flames of the 11 April Masan Democratic Uprising spread across the country, eventually culminating in the 19 April Revolution. For this reason, this place came to be called the "Birthplace of the April Revolution," and it was the first site in Korea connected with the democratisation movement to be designated as cultural heritage.
