A beacon station (bongsudae) was a pre-modern means of communication set up on a hilltop with a good view, used to signal emergencies such as enemy invasions by lighting a torch at night and raising smoke by day. The Usan beacon station in Tongyeong is a coastal beacon station presumed to have been built before the early Joseon period. The mountain on which it stands was called "Usan" (Ox Mountain) in the Joseon period, because the shape of its ridge was thought to resemble the back of an ox. This beacon station was built to give warning of Japanese pirate incursions and to keep watch over conditions in the surrounding waters, and it is a defence-related heritage site of considerable historical significance.
