Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJo Min-su (d. 1390) was a military official of the late Goryeo period whose clan seat was Changnyeong. He rendered great service in repelling invasions by Japanese pirates and the Red Turbans in the closing years of Goryeo, and after holding a succession of offices, including Chancellor of the Royal Secretariat (munhasijung), he was enfeoffed as Lord of Changseong. In 1388, the fourteenth year of King U, he set out as Commander of the Left Army in the campaign to conquer Liaodong, but turned back with Yi Seong-gye at Wihwado Island, playing a key role in deposing King U and installing King Chang. In 1389, however, he was driven into exile in Changnyeong by the faction of Yi Seong-gye, and he died there in 1390. The tomb precinct consists of one burial mound, one gravestone with a flower-crown-shaped capstone (hwagwanseok myopyo), and a pair of civil official stone statues. According to an inscription on the reverse of the stone, the hwagwanseok gravestone was erected in the eleventh month of a gyesa year by Jo Min-su's great-grandson, Yeon, in his capacity as a censor of the Office of the Inspector-General. According to the Changnyeong Jo clan genealogy, this gyesa year corresponds to 1473, the fourth year of King Seongjong. The hwagwanseok gravestone is in a style that emerged in the early Joseon period and remained popular until the first half of the sixteenth century before disappearing, and the archaic, unadorned form of this example indicates that it was erected in the latter half of the fifteenth century. The civil official statues wear a bokdu cap and gongbok official robes; the sleeves of the robes are very wide, concealing the two hands holding a hol tablet, a feature characteristic of the style of the mid- to late fifteenth century.
