Sangdong Buncheong Ware Kiln Site, Gimhae
김해 상동 분청사기 가마터 · 金海 上東 粉靑沙器 가마터

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Sejong sillok jiriji (Geographical Appendix to the Veritable Records of King Sejong) records that there was a single ceramics workshop at Gammurya-chon, a village east of Gimhae-dohobu that produced ware of the lowest grade. The present place name of Daegam-ri, Sangdong-myeon, is believed to derive from a contraction of Daegammurya-ri, making this area likely to have been the site of a ceramics workshop that supplied tribute wares in the Joseon period. An excavation of part of the area proposed for designation also confirmed one buncheong ware kiln and three refuse dumps; beneath Kiln No. 1 and Refuse Dump No. 1, Three Kingdoms-period tombs were also identified. Fragments of buncheong ware were found at the site, including sherds inlaid with the inscription 'Jangheung', indicating that this was a ceramics kiln site of the mid-Joseon period. The ware produced here is thought to have been supplied to the Gimhae, Yangsan and Busan areas, making this an important site.
