Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a maetdol, a traditional millstone, standing in a flower bed beside the steps leading up to Bomunsa Temple's Samseong-gak, the Hall of the Three Sages. A maetdol is a tool for grinding grain, made up of an upper and a lower stone. It is made of granite, 69 cm in diameter and 20 cm thick, finely finished with soft curves. Most surviving maetdol today retain only the upper stone, but both the upper and lower stones of this one survive intact. Its exact date of manufacture is unknown, but its overall style suggests it was made in the late Joseon period, and it is about twice the size of an ordinary maetdol.
