This is a traditional upper-class house comprising a main hall (anchae), a men's quarters (sarangchae), a servants' quarters (haengnangchae), a storehouse (gotganchae) and a gate house. Jeong Byeong-ho built the main hall and gate house in 1899; after Yi Jang-u purchased the property in 1959, he completed the men's quarters, servants' quarters and storehouse, bringing the house to its present form. Of these, the main hall was designated a folk heritage of Gwangju Metropolitan City in 1989, and the storehouse, once destroyed by fire, was restored in 2009. The main hall is a tile-roofed building on an L-shaped plan, with a hip-and-gable roof carried on a frame of two interior columns and five purlins. From left to right it has a room with a narrow wooden veranda, a central wooden-floored hall (daecheong), the main bedroom and the kitchen, with a small room set in the angled section. Dr Yi Jang-u, known by his pen name Donggang (1919–2002), contributed to the development of education in the Honam region through his passion and conviction for education, founding Donggang Kindergarten, Dongsin Middle and High Schools, Dongsin Girls' Middle and High Schools, Donggang College and Dongsin University.
