Gaetaesacheolhwak
개태사철확 · 開泰寺鐵확

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGaetaesa is a temple founded by King Taejo, Wang Geon, of Goryeo. The cheolhwak is a large iron cauldron said to have been used in the temple's kitchen, shaped like an upturned beotgeot, a broad-brimmed felt hat. It measures 289 cm in diameter, 910 cm in circumference, 96 cm in height and 3 cm in thickness. When the temple fell out of use during the Joseon period, the cauldron was left abandoned in open fields. Because it was believed that moving the cauldron during a drought would bring rain, it was relocated to various places over time. After being put on display at an exposition held in Seoul during the Japanese colonial period, it was brought to the newly rebuilt Gaetaesa Temple, where it is preserved today.
