Choe Seung-hyo House
최승효가옥 · 崔昇孝家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house is large in scale, with a frontage of eight bays and a depth of four bays, and a hip-and-gable roof. Its roof tiles are unusually finished in red glaze, and an asymmetrical treatment of the façade gives it a sense of rhythm, making the house a valuable record of how the traditional Korean house changed during the enlightenment period (gaehwagi) of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The sloping ground on the right of the site was used in its natural state to form a semi-basement, and spring water flowing down from the hillside and the rock face was channelled to create a pond, further enhancing the building's elegant atmosphere. Built in the 1920s, this house has an attic beneath its roof, giving it the added significance of having served as a hiding place for independence activists.
