Kim Yong-hak House
김용학가옥 · 金容鶴家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in the early 1900s, this residence has a house and pavilions harmoniously arranged on a hillside. Taking advantage of the terrain, which is low in the northeast and high in the southwest, the sarangchae (men's quarters) and anchae (women's quarters) were placed on the lower ground along an east-west central axis. A pond and the Haeunjeong Pavilion were placed to the left of the living quarters, with Yeonpajeong Pavilion situated behind them, so that the buildings would blend harmoniously with nature. Climbing the stone steps from the anchae courtyard up the hillock, one finds Haeunjeong and Yeonpajeong pavilions surrounded by old cherry trees. Haeunjeong and Yeonpajeong are pavilions built in 1933. Yeonpajeong was originally built by Kim Yong-hak's father, Kim Hui-su, in honour of his own father; it is said to have burned down and been rebuilt when Kim Yong-hak built Haeunjeong in honour of his own father. Although not particularly old, this house is notable for the harmony it achieves with its beautiful surrounding scenery.
