Yanggeum Shakyamuni Ok

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the ancestral house of the Yang clan, built around 60 years ago. The main house (anchae) stands at the centre of a site of about 600 pyeong, with the outer house (bakkatchae) arranged facing it. In the anchae, centred on the wooden-floored hall, there is a large room to the left and a kitchen to the right; the narrow wooden veranda runs only in front of the large room and the hall, so the kitchen occupies a wide space. In the bakkatchae, centred on its hall, there is a room at the front left and, to the rear, a gopang, a storage room for grain, with narrow verandas set at both the front and rear of the wooden-floored room. Across the anchae and bakkatchae together, the Yang clan ancestral house has four rooms, three narrow verandas and three wooden-floored rooms, and is notable for showing a varied spatial composition even among the traditional thatched houses of Jeju.
