Yongsudongdangsan Mountain

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOn the valley to the left of the road leading to Donghwasa Temple on Palgongsan Mountain lies Yongsu Village. The village has a dangsan, a shrine that is a direct object of worship, where natural stones of various sizes have been piled up in a round form among several trees, giving it a relatively smooth appearance. Here, rites are held praying for the peace and prosperity of the village; the costs are met jointly by the village, and the village elders gather to choose the officiant. The chosen officiant bathes and purifies himself in the stream in front of the village on the day of the rite, then performs the ceremony alone. According to village tradition, this dangsan originated when the Bae and Gu clans, the first to settle in the village, planted trees and piled stones at the village entrance and began holding rites there. The custom of the communal dangsan-gut shrine rite, once carried out together by all the villagers, disappeared from the late 1970s, but the dangsan itself still holds its firm place as the guardian deity protecting the village.
