A yeongsang is a painted or sculpted representation of the likeness of a Buddha or a person. This one is presumed to be a yeongsang of Sin Jam (1491–1554), an official during the reign of King Jungjong of Joseon. While serving as magistrate of the Taein region, Sin Jam built schools at four sites to the east, west, south and north, taught Confucian learning, and governed the people with benevolence. When he later left Taein, the people erected a stele in his honour and made statues of him, his wife, his eldest son, an attendant woman, and a tiger, which they enshrined. The statue of Sin Jam measures 85.6 cm, that of his wife 76.5 cm, his eldest son 58.5 cm, the attendant 55.5 cm, and the tiger 61.5 cm. The shrine building collapsed around 1950, and today only the statues, that is the yeongsang, are kept in the folklore materials room of Taein Elementary School. All the statues are standing figures carved of wood, painted in vivid colours, with very fine carving work. The exact date of their making is not known, but it is said that every year on New Year's Day and the day of the first full moon of the lunar year, a rite praying for the village's peace is held here.
