Kim Seok-yun House
김석윤가옥 · 金石崙家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krTile-roofed houses are very rare among the folk houses of Jeju Island. They were found scattered only in a few places, such as Mukeunseong, where officials resided, and the coastal ports of Hwabuk, Sinchon and Jocheon. Built in 1904 and passed down through three generations, this house can be seen as a representative example of the developed form of Jeju folk houses. Only the outer gate quarters and the inner house are tile-roofed, while the outer house and the side wing are thatched, the separate buildings arranged around a courtyard in a U-shaped layout; this shows a form that grafts, onto the base of Jeju's traditional residential style, the function of the sarangchae, the male space found in upper-class mainland houses. A further distinctive feature is the very heavy, coarse, round original Jeju roof tiles and stepping stones, the broad site for stacking grain sheaves, the kitchen garden, and, in the garden beside the men's quarters, a dedicated space for quiet reflection landscaped with chrysanthemum, bamboo and plum, three of the Four Gentlemen plants.
