Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA seondol is an elongated natural stone, or a large rock only partly shaped, that is erected upright as a monument or an object of worship. Standing in the yard of a private house in Ipseok Village, this seondol measures 230 cm in height, 40 cm in thickness and 75 cm in width, and is made of granite. It has an elongated pillar shape that narrows towards the top; in particular, the middle section clearly shows horizontal lines dividing it into four parts, cut by human hand. At its base, earth and broken stones were mixed and compacted to a depth of about 1 m to fix the stone firmly in the ground. Each year, at the first full moon of the lunar year, a communal village rite praying for abundance and good fortune used to be held here, but this ceased after the Korean War, and now only private rites are performed. Seondol are widespread in Jeollanam-do, and most take the form of flat slabs, or are formed where two stones are naturally fitted together to symbolise the harmony of yin and yang; by contrast, the seondol here was artificially shaped, making it an unusual example.
