This house stands in a clan village of the Hadong Jeong family in Hwaseong, and is presumed to have been built towards the end of the 19th century. It was originally a large residential house with many outbuildings, but today only the main hall (anchae), the men's quarters (sarangchae) and the gatehouse remain. The house is arranged with a ㄱ-shaped anchae facing a ㄴ-shaped sarangchae, forming a rectangular inner courtyard between them, while a straight, 一-shaped servants' quarters stands to the left of the anchae around its own service yard. The front of the sarangchae is enclosed by a wall with a main gate, forming a separate outer courtyard. The wall around the sarangchae is built of natural stone, but the walls around the anchae and the gatehouse have posts set up at one-bay intervals, with an upper frame and roof built over them — a very unusual form. The ridge-raising inscription in the gatehouse records that it was built in 1904, but to judge from the frame structure and the way the timber has been finished, the anchae appears to have been built earlier than the gate. Throughout the house, the buildings, walls and entrances are skilfully combined, and while the sarangchae and anchae are kept spatially separate, the paths linking them are arranged closely for everyday convenience. It is a house that shows, at every turn, an ingenious use of space, and it is valuable material for understanding the development of Gyeonggi-do houses in the late Joseon period.
